The public library operating in Gál Ferenc University’s building in Dóm Square in Szeged has a unique role among the libraries of the region. Its duty is to support the scientific work of the university, to assist the professional advancement of students and to serve the religious, theological and spiritual edification of the priests and the congregation of the Diocese by helping books. It is primarily a special theological library, collecting theological, i.e. biblical, dogmatic, moral, pastoral and catechetical documents; nearly 65,000 volumes altogether. Other related sciences are also represented by books on the themes of philosophy, history, sociology, ethnography, law, arts, psychology and pedagogy.
The main focus of the Library of the Pedagogical Faculty is on documents belonging to the scope of pedagogy, education and teaching. The library of Szarvas has some 38,000 books. According to the types of documents, the collection is composed of books, Hungarian and foreign periodicals, university theses, CD-ROMs and some smaller collections of old books.
The libraries of Gál Ferenc University support the programme of life-long learning. The education is aided by more than 20.000 volumes at the Faculty of Health and Social Sciences in Gyula. The collection is composed of literature, university notes, thesis papers and audio-visual materials. In the university library the health sciences library background was implemented first: by today there is a wide range of volumes on psychology, sociology, EU studies, language books and social sciences.
The Library of the Faculty of Economics of Gál Ferenc University is a higher education and an open-access library, and it has nearly 60.000 volumes. The library was established in 1986, in the year of the foundation of the university, and it has become a community area and a meeting point as well in Békéscsaba.
